Christine A. Courtois, PhD, ABPP

Dr. Courtois’ ground-breaking treatment of complex posttraumatic and dissociative conditions is internationally renowned. She is the author of "It’s Not You, It’s What Happened to You: Complex Trauma and Treatment", as well as numerous other books on trauma treatment

Complex trauma is the result of repetitive, prolonged child abuse, neglect, abandonment, or other attachment-related trauma. The aftereffects are complex, spanning the neurobiological, psychological, interpersonal, and spiritual realms. They can have lifelong impact or can appear periodically, often disguised as other conditions—such as mood disorders, personality disorders, or substance problems—making them especially difficult to identify and treat.

This training will provide an overview of complex trauma aftereffects and their associated diagnoses, with emphasis on the neurobiological and dissociative aspects. It will also describe a sequenced treatment approach that extends beyond addressing posttraumatic symptoms. This sequenced approach includes three phases:

1. Establishing safety, stabilization, emotional regulation, and skill-building
2. Trauma-focused strategies geared towards trauma processing, resolution, and integration that counters dissociation
3. Life management and posttraumatic growth
