Recent events have highlighted the power of racial issues and of traumatic events in people’s lives. Racial events often involve trauma and may leave life-long shadows on how people relate to others and to their environment. Supervision, which is aimed at protecting clients, is intimately caught up in the maelstrom of issues that race and trauma can engender. Both the supervisor and the supervisee often struggle with building a relationship that honors the reality of race and trauma in professional partnerships and which subsequently affects client services. This seminar will deal with some strategies that can assist us in making supervision more realistic, more accepting, and more targeted toward improving client services to those who are dealing with the effects of race and trauma. Individuals who attend this seminar will:
Be able to identify connections between race and trauma in supervision;
Articulate strategies that will have a positive effect on supervisory relationships in which race and trauma are factors;
Create strategies to deal with the interconnectedness of race and trauma in real cases, to improve client services.
