Clinical Work with Clients who have Disabilities

The workshop is an introduction to counseling individuals with physical disabilities. The workshop includes demographic information as well as specifics related to the onset and adaptation to physical disabilities for both children and adults. Discussion will include specific strategies for counseling individuals with disabilities as individual clients as well as in a group setting, and the workshop will conclude with two vignettes of clients with disabilities and how therapists might best work with those individuals and their families.

Jeremy Smith is a professional counselor currently in private practice. Jeremy has previously worked for the United States Army and in community mental health settings. As someone with a disability, Jeremy has a personal and professional interest in the subject of adaptation to disability and is working to combine his own experience and his experience as a mental health professional to better train clinicians who might see individuals with disabilities
